Tips
- Upload the same CAD file to 2-3 instant-quote services to compare, and ask for a manufacturability (DFM) review before paying for a mold.
- Concept only? Hire a CAD designer (Fiverr or a local product-design studio) to turn the images into a STEP file first.
Design rules
- Manufacturers quote from a 3D CAD file (STEP preferred) plus a 2D drawing for tolerances and threads; from a sketch or photo, hire a CAD designer first.
- Standard tolerances are cheapest: tighten them only where parts fit together.
- Injection molding needs even walls (about 1.5-3 mm), 1-2° draft and no undercuts unless you pay for side actions in the tool.
- Prototype first (3D print or CNC), urethane-cast 10-100, and order an injection mold only once the design is frozen.
What manufacturers need from you
- Part and what it does: e.g. housing for a 60 x 40 mm board, bracket holding 5 kg
- Size (mm): overall L x W x H
- Material: aluminum 6061, stainless steel, mild steel, ABS, polycarbonate, nylon, POM (Delrin), silicone / rubber
- Finish (optional): as machined, bead blasted, anodized (color), powder coat, painted, textured (molded)
- Tolerances (optional): standard is about ±0.1 mm; call out only the critical fits
- CAD file available? (optional): yes (STEP), yes (STL only), no, sketch or photo only
- Loads and environment (optional): indoor or outdoor, heat, food contact, waterproof
